How to Install OptiFine

OptiFine installs as a custom Minecraft profile. You download a single .jar file, run it, click Install, then launch the OptiFine profile from the Minecraft Launcher. The whole process usually takes under two minutes.

Requirements

  • Minecraft Java Edition installed and launched at least once.
  • Java installed (usually bundled with Minecraft).
  • The OptiFine version that matches your Minecraft version.

Step-by-step

  1. 1Download the correct OptiFine version for your Minecraft version from the Downloads page.
  2. 2Make sure Minecraft Java Edition is installed and has been launched at least once for that version.
  3. 3Open the downloaded OptiFine .jar file by double-clicking it (Java is required).
  4. 4In the installer window, click Install.
  5. 5Open the official Minecraft Launcher.
  6. 6In the Installations tab, select the new OptiFine profile.
  7. 7Click Play to launch Minecraft with OptiFine.

Troubleshooting

The .jar file does not open

Right-click the file → Open With → Java. If Java is not listed, install Java first or launch Minecraft once so the bundled Java runtime is available.

Java is missing

Install the latest Java runtime, or launch Minecraft once with the version you want to install OptiFine for — Minecraft ships a compatible Java runtime.

OptiFine profile does not appear

Open the Minecraft Launcher, go to Installations, and toggle the "Modded" filter on. If still missing, re-run the OptiFine installer.

Wrong Minecraft version

OptiFine builds are tied to a specific Minecraft version. Double-check the version on the Downloads page and use the matching .jar.
