How to Install Shaders with OptiFine

OptiFine includes built-in shader support. Once OptiFine is installed, adding a shader pack is just dragging a .zip file into a folder and clicking it in the Video Settings menu.

Step-by-step

  1. 1Install OptiFine for your Minecraft version.
  2. 2Download a shader pack (a .zip file) from a trusted shader pack site.
  3. 3Open Minecraft and launch the OptiFine profile.
  4. 4Go to Options.
  5. 5Open Video Settings.
  6. 6Open the Shaders menu.
  7. 7Click Shaders Folder — this opens the shaderpacks folder in your file explorer.
  8. 8Move the shader .zip file into the folder.
  9. 9Back in Minecraft, click the shader name in the list to enable it.

Performance notes

Shaders are GPU-heavy. If your FPS drops, lower the shader's internal quality (most packs include Low / Medium / High profiles), reduce the Minecraft render distance, and disable optional effects like motion blur or volumetric clouds.

Pick a shader that matches your OptiFine version
Older shader packs may not work with newer OptiFine builds. Most pack pages list the supported OptiFine version range.
