Installing OptiFine With Forge
OptiFine can be loaded as a Forge mod, which lets you keep your other mods while still getting shader support and the OptiFine video settings. Compatibility depends on three things matching: the Minecraft version, the Forge version, and the OptiFine build.
Step-by-step
- 1Install Minecraft Java Edition for the target version and launch it once.
- 2Download Forge for the same Minecraft version from the official Forge site.
- 3Run the Forge installer and choose 'Install client'.
- 4Open Minecraft Launcher and run the Forge profile once so the mods folder is created.
- 5Download the matching OptiFine build from the OptiFine downloads page.
- 6Open the .minecraft/mods folder and drop the OptiFine .jar inside it.
- 7Launch the Forge profile again — OptiFine should load alongside your other mods.
Versions must match
OptiFine and Forge compatibility can vary. If the game crashes, check that both files match the same Minecraft version, and try the previous OptiFine build for that Minecraft version.
Troubleshooting
Game crashes on launch
Almost always a version mismatch. Re-verify the Minecraft version, Forge version, and the OptiFine build all target the same Minecraft release.
OptiFine not loading
Make sure the OptiFine .jar sits directly inside the mods folder, not in a subfolder. The file name should still start with OptiFine_.
Mod conflict
Some shader-related or rendering mods overlap with OptiFine. Disable those one at a time to find the conflict.
