Minecraft Backup Guide
Before installing OptiFine, Forge, or any mod, back up your worlds. Mod conflicts, version mismatches, and bad updates can corrupt save files. A 30-second copy now saves a lot of frustration later.
Always back up before changing mods or versions
Switching Minecraft versions or adding mods can permanently change world data. Always copy your saves folder first.
Where is the Minecraft folder?
- Windows:
%appdata%\.minecraft - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft - Linux:
~/.minecraft
Step-by-step
- 1Open your Minecraft folder (paths below for each OS).
- 2Locate the saves folder — this is where your worlds live.
- 3Copy the whole saves folder to a safe location like an external drive or cloud sync folder.
- 4Back up resourcepacks, shaderpacks, options.txt, and screenshots while you're there.
- 5If something breaks, replace the new saves folder with your backup to restore.
